“I moved into a shared home a few weeks ago, and have become quite settled. And now I’m less stressed, I have been reflecting on being here.

I was absolutely terrified when I was told I was moving into shared accommodation. I imagined convicts and druggies, lots of noise and arguments. I thought I was basically going to be abandoned for years with a disinterested landlord, and a prisoner in my own home because of strict rules. I am so grateful that’s not the case.

I am nearly 40 years old, I am disabled, and I am autistic. I am a teacher of mental health and wellbeing. I am one of those plants that only blooms in rather specific soil. And I was sure I would wither away after being uprooted. But the people, the environment, and the policy here are so much better than expected.

James and Josie are our heroes. Everyone else working in the background on this project has our thanks.

James is always here when we need him, and in so many ways! He has provided adaptations I have required, helped in the setting up of a little garden, answered hundreds of questions, and is a darn good cook!

Josie is a cleaning demon who never misses a thing. She’s efficient and thorough, perfect for someone with a flavour of OCD in their autism, like me.

But more than that, they have become our friends. No judgements, no animosity, only respect and care. They give me space to talk, to have opinions, and to have ideas. They make me feel heard and understood. Honestly, you have the best people on the ground out here.

This could have been a living nightmare but, because of everyone’s hard work in pioneering this project, it is a comfortable and friendly place to be. Thank you for caring about those of us that usually get left behind. Thank you for providing an environment in which we can thrive. Thank you for every time I smile instead of cry. I am so incredibly lucky to have ended up here, and I am eternally grateful.”
